The Saratoga Performing Arts Center or SPAC, is a private, not-for-profit
corporation. While an amphitheater was included in the original 1935 plans
for the Spa, the building was not constructed until 1966. Summer programs
here are administered by SPAC.
For three weeks in July, the New York City Ballet is in residence, and from
late July through mid-August, the Philadelphia Orchestra resides. The building
seats five thousand people, and another seven thousand can be accommodated
on the sloping lawn. Special events, rock concerts, and festivals can draw
up to forty thousand people. The facility is used by many local high schools
for graduation exercises. The large capacity allows for an unlimited number
of family and friends to attend the graduation ceremonies.
