The Saratoga Spa was operated as a health center. People would come for
a four-week program. They would stay at the Gideon
Putnam Hotel, and would
follow the treatment, which included an exercise and water consumption program
recommended by the doctors in residence. The hotel is named for Gideon Putnam,
who was a prominent resident of Saratoga Springs in the early 1800's.
Today, the hotel is a year-round facility open to the public. In addition to being a popular place to stay during the horseracing season, which extends from late July to early September, it has summer and winter sports specials, and also serves as a destination for family reunions, weddings and holiday get-togethers. During the 1960's, the conference center was added. The conference center is the structure on the left side of the hotel. The single story “Arches” addition is a very desirable place for wedding receptions and great for Sunday brunch.
The National Trust for Historic Preservation has recognized the hotel as a member of the Historic Hotel of Americas.
